Lilly's ADU

This detached ADU is only 250 sf but feels much larger. Intentionally oriented towards a small ornamental tree in the back yard, the dwelling captures ample filtered light through the tree via a corner set of glass doors and windows.

Inspired by the "passive house" standards, this adu features a super insulated floor slab, wall and roof systems. Attention to the selection of all building materials was important to ensure that each element met the desired sustainability targets that we set.
The backyard adu is only 250 sf and has a full bath, full size kitchen, loft bedroom and a living room. Designed with a high performance envelope, the energy required to heat the dwelling unit is insignificant.

An open and well lit kitchen with a set of double doors that open to the private backyard space and focuses onto a dogwood tree makes the interior feel even larger and connected to the back yard.

A simple, efficient and compact kitchen given the size of the dwelling unit. Light filled and open allows the unit to feel even larger.

Looking down from the loft space. The overall design and sofa placement revolves around the view from the sofa to the adjacent dogwood through the glass doors and windows. The sofa also functions as pull out bed for unexpected guests.
