This home was built in 1913 in rural Schomberg, ON, and the original kitchen was a tiny little space in the home's original pantry. Next to the pantry was an eating room, disconnected from the pantry by a wall. The pantry had a dumb waiter in the corner that would lower and raise to move root vegetables from the stone cellar up to the main level for cooking. By removing the dumbwaiter, we gained room for a tiny powder room (no bathroom on the main floor previously), which added real estate value to the home, and added convenience for the family. We rebuilt the kitchen in the new open plan of both rooms, and provided a much bigger, brighter, more hip and wonderful space for this family to cook home meals and entertain in.
