Masculine Berkeley Office

When it came time to designing his office, our client had some specific requests. One: create a space that felt dignified and cozy. Two: make use of the fantastic view of the gardens below. And three: display the amazing paintings that had been in his family for years.

One painting in particular--the abstract filled with greens, browns, blacks and a hint of orange--inspired the palette. We painted the walls (and mouldings and doors too) in a cool green with a hint of gray. This wrapped the room in color, creating a lovely cocoon-like effect. The wall to wall carpet added another note of interest: in fawn brown with a subtle pattern, it’s both luxurious and practical, and further adds to the clubby atmosphere.

The black console stores all the items he needs, including a printer, supplies and files. But since it is made to look like an apothecary cabinet, it reads as pretty furniture, rather than unimaginative storage. The lounge chair provides a lovely perch for reading, and the leather sofa gives an additional place to kick back and relax when work is done.

The end result is a space that is both handsome and functional. Our client loves spending time in here, and says it’s really improved his day to day, just like any good room should.
