Master Bedroom Suite becomes a Sanctuary

This project was a complete renovation of an existing Master Bedroom Suite. Subtle textures, soothing colors and natural materials are used to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere: sanctuary.

Island Stone tile creates a textured headboard for the bed. The canopy above, edged in matching rift-sawn white oak, provides a sense of enclosure.

A pair of custom wood sliding barn doors grace the far wall. The doors are constructed of rift-sawn white oak with teak panels. When closed, they hide the entry to the Master Bathroom and walk-in-closet.

The new windows more than double the amount of glass and view, filling the Master Bedroom with natural light and views of the desert landscape and the mountains beyond.

A slot at the back of the canopy washes light down the Island Stone headboard. Additional lights provide for nighttime reading in bed.

The soft colors, textures and teak wood continue into the Master Bathroom. Rectilinear forms play off the existing curved wall of glass block. The large window next to the bathtub allows for the enjoyment of nature while bathing.

The shower is defined on one side by a single sheet of glass. Opposite the shower, as seen in the mirror's reflection, is the toilet room.

The vanity was custom made of solid teak. The sink is a double-width trough sink, set under the quart countertop. The medicine cabinet has a custom teak frame to match the vanity.

The glass block is original to the house, and is used as a motif throughout the house. Soft lighting under the vanity and in the niche act as nightlights.

Two Ikea PAX wardrobe units are wrapped in solid teak panels to tie into the detailing of the vanity.

Soft lighting washes the matching porcelain mosaic tiles at the back of the niches.

This small niche is in the private toilet room. The light acts as a nightlight.
