Modern Black Kitchen

Sleek and Warm: A Modern Black Kitchen in a Compact Amherst ADU

This modern kitchen in Amherst, Massachusetts proves that small spaces can still feel elevated. Part of a new accessory dwelling unit (ADU), the kitchen features rich textures, clean lines, and a layout that prioritizes both function and style. Architect Maria Chao led the design, with construction by Integrity Development & Construction and concrete countertops by Hillstreet Concrete.

The palette is simple and impactful. We built inset-style cabinetry using black-stained birch plywood, allowing the natural grain to show through. These dark, matte cabinets contrast with a whitewashed maple island, creating warmth and depth without overwhelming the space.

Despite the compact footprint, the kitchen feels open and bright, thanks to high ceilings and clerestory windows that flood the room with natural light throughout the day. It’s a great example of how layout and materials can completely transform a small kitchen.

We also fabricated and finished the ceiling and wall panels in-house to match the cabinetry — a move that blurs the line between millwork and architecture. The result nods to both midcentury modern cabinetry and classic post-and-beam interiors.

And of course, the kitchen is made to work hard:
– The island includes open shelving and hidden waste storage
– A black concrete counter keeps the look grounded and cohesive
– Bar seating makes the space both social and practical

Every element was chosen for beauty, durability, and ease of use — proving that modern design can be both expressive and efficient.
