Modern Steading Conversion

A dilapidated steading was given a new life by inserting a new, upside down house within the existing stone walls of the steading.

The new build walls were clad in black corrugated metal cladding to give bold contrast between the old and new. Existing openings in the steading were respected to maintain the character of the steading as much as possible. This decision, as well as the steadings beautiful setting within farmland in the Perthshire hills, drove the decision for the house to be upside down.

Downstairs is characterised by generous but cosy bedrooms & bathrooms with quirky, deep windows in the existing stone walls that give a sense of shelter. In contracts, upstairs hosts a large, vaulted ceiling, exposed structure and open plan Kitchen / Dining / Living area which honours the agricultural scale of the original steading. A generous master suite is also located on the first floor with dramatic high ceilings and framed views.

Functionally, the house is very energy efficient with high levels of insulation, a large array of solar panels and heating provided by ASHPs. The house also has a double 'drive through' garage, a large utility room and a hidden office meaning it offers everything under one roof and is generous throughout.

The steading conversion is a strikingly modern home but retains the character of it's past agricultural use.
