Red Brick Orangery Extension

The clients’ love of Crittall windows, and the home's proximity to Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens, were the drivers behind the design of this "Orangery" extension.

The extension was clad in red brick and sandstone, taking reference from the existing red sandstone façade at the front of the house. The use of black Crittall-style doors and windows created bold contrast against the brickwork, while casting animated patterns of light and shadow throughout the interior.

To bring more natural light inside, multiple roof lights, aligned with the rear door and window openings. These allow even more direct light into the extension and to reach deeper into the existing house.

Internally, a broken-plan layout creates fluid circulation while maintaining functional zones. The open space includes a contemporary kitchen, a bright dining area, a peaceful reading nook and a semi-private office tucked to the side. The office space can be discreetly enclosed with pocket sliding Crittall doors, offering flexibility to its use. A cleverly concealed utility room adjacent to the kitchen also adds practical convenience.

This extension blends classic character with a modern composition and is finished in striking materials.
