NoLita Penthouse
This large penthouse rooftop becomes a ‘living’ extension of the living spaces on the apartment’s interior. The garden is divided into four zones that respond to the character of their adjacent uses, while maintaining a seamless flow between one another and the apartment itself. Three of the zones are arranged around a shared spine – a continuous zig-zagging hedge. The first of those zones is a 250 SF planted-in-place area composed of grasses, sedums and thyme contrasted with river rock and irregular paving stones. The small ornamental garden was conceived of as a visual extension of the interior sitting area, however, the stone pavers and creeping thyme also allow for pedestrian access. The other two zones arranged around the spine are seating areas. The first is nestled under a tree canopy of river birch and ornamental plum while the other, sited at the outer corner of the rooftop, remains open to the cityscape that envelops it. The fourth and final zone, separated from the rest of the garden by a glass brick stairwell, is the outdoor kitchen and dining area. Furnished with a gas range and climate controlled wine case, the kitchen is shaded by a series of adjustable canvases suspended from cables that extend off of a wrap-around metal pergola. The pergola is covered with climbing vines, and a bamboo screen defines the outer perimeter.
