Northwest Hills Addition and Facelift
This project was intended to increase square footage, improve interior views and flow, and add contemporary flair to a traditional home. The clients frequently entertain, and therefore primary considerations were traffic flow, seating, lighting, and efficiency. Priorities in the kitchen were serving surfaces, appliances and amenities, and preventing bottlenecks as guests pass from room to room. We expanded doorways between the kitchen and dining areas (with frosted glass sliding doors for optional separation), and removed dining room partition walls to maximize formal seating.
As the family room was another key area for gathering, we designed a custom media wall and fireplace as a primary focal point. A traditional mantel and firebox were removed, as well as dated glass shelving. We replaced them with sleek stained base cabinets for media storage, and floating shelves above with woven wallpaper for subtle texture. LED lighting under shelves accentuates display items and adds atmosphere. The new fireplace was built from a rich marble slab, and capped with a mantel of the same wood as the shelves.
Previous flooring had breaks from room to room. To maximize flow and the perception of space we replaced it with natural white oak throughout. The stair well, previously a solid core of the home, was given a contemporary touch and transparency with a custom designed glass rail and stainless cap at the landing. This plays off the glass and stainless bar cabinets, as well as providing an elegant link of the new aesthetic through the house.
