Spicewood Remodel

This remodel was for a British client from Chicago who chose to settle down in Spicewood, Texas. The couple’s style was English traditional, but their new home had a Mediterranean flair and several layout challenges. We reworked the upstairs to create a spacious kitchen and living space, and added a guest bedroom, bathroom, study, mudroom, wine room, and garage below. During the remodel we carefully selected surfaces, architectural details, and furnishings in an attempt to marry the client’s preference for refined interiors with the home’s architecture.
One special aspect of design detail was the tile and stonework. Areas of focus were the fireplace, where we incorporated hand-made tiles and a custom stone mantel, the kitchen backsplash, where we used a complimentary hand-made tile, the entry, where we created an inset “rug” of shaped concrete, the mudroom and wine room, with rustic tumbled marble on floors and walls, and the bathrooms, where we created patterns with various combinations of travertine, limestone, leuders, and marble.
Fine craftsmanship is also evident in the ironwork. We designed iron double entry doors, a detailed iron door to the wine room, and new custom stair railings. The most unusual addition to the home was our solution for the upstairs kitchen and living area; where with careful planning we incorporated a dumb waiter from the garage into the new kitchen cabinets, allowing for ease of unloading groceries. The end result is a spacious and elegant take on classic European style in the middle of Texas Hill Country!
