Ozzy's Place

This beautiful DC rowhome built in the 40's had so much character but needed some serious floorplan strategy. It also needed a fresh lease on life to enter 2018.
The homeowners requested a more open floor plan to overcome the dark and teeny kitchen, additional closet spaces, and all new bathrooms. Not only do we love homeowners who are ok with outside-the-box design but we love these homes that have so much beauty already built-in. The exposed brick and original staircase...so much to swoon over! We strategized and came up with a new floorplan but worked extra hard to leave all the lovely details that tell this home's story. Going mid-century in style was a nod to its story with a smidge of an updated look. And boy do we love how it all came out!

We started the new design with the cement tile floor and then built the color scheme. Once we nailed the floor, everything else fell into place.

With all the variation in the cement tile floor, it was essential to keep the uppers and lowers the same color. These blue cabinets came out just perfect for the space.

Choosing a more interesting shape for the subway backsplash tile gave this classic tile pattern a nice twist.

Because of the 2 windows and a door, we couldn’t put cabinets there without it looking weird. The homeowners needed storage but didn’t want to lose light, so we came up with this open shelving plan.

Styling the dining room mid-century in furniture and chandelier really added the "different" elements the homeowners were looking for. The new pattern in the run tied in to the kitchen without being too matchy matchy.

These gorgeous stairs were original to the home and we found no reason to rip out beauty. It took a little longer to refinish but we knew it would pay off.

When a client wants to be more modern than the house, you tie in historic elements to bring it all together. The hex shape of the floor in this guest bathroom is consistent with the time period of the home while the material (cement) is modern for DC.

The homeowners wanted a dual vanity (who doesn't?) but it was a small space, so we designed custom cabinetry to the depth that would work in the bathroom and kept it floating so that the space would look bigger. And the blue tile is a play off of the kitchen downstairs to keep a consistent thread...

Every inch counts in a dc rowhome, so we moved the powder room from where the kitchen island is to the right side of the kitchen. It opened up the space perfectly and still gave the homeowners the function of a powder room. And the lovely exposed brick... swoon.
