PALM ISLAND

This very modern house is a second home for a family from New Jersey. Since the clients were from out of town, they hired a great team of professionals to create their home. Ralph Choeff was the architect, Amicon was the owners rep, Accolade was the builder and Charlotte Dunagan Design Group designed the interiors.

The project brief was to have a low maintenance, eco friendly and entertainment ready home, for when family and friends come to visit. Some of the incredible bonuses of the property included a rare permit for a roof top deck as well as a “grandfathered in” extra wide and extra long deck. This deck creates an incredible visual expansion of their back yard (which is actually a smaller lot on the island).

In an effort to keep the design very simple but still warm and “wow” a few key design elements were created. There is a massive interior stone wall flanked by a nearly free floating staircase. Barn-like sliding doors add a rustic contrast to the sleek porcelain tile floor. An existing cavity in the wall was used to create a dynamic and chic wine cellar with a bronzed porcelain background and metal racking system. Sleek glass doors reveal the interior.

The kitchen from Eggersman was designed to be sleek and hide all appliances as it is open to the main living space. The kitchen island, made out of rustic wood creates warmth and interest and has a unique cantilever extension made out of Corian which became the home’s dining table. This element creates an informal yet fun and inviting atmosphere.

Throughout the house, in an effort to connect the inside to the outside, the architect and landscape architect created a series of large floor to ceiling windows. From the master bathroom tub, one could nearly feel as if he or she were in a bird’s nest.

Between the choice of materials and the interesting architectural details, the house remains both modern and elegant, yet warm and inviting.

It is the perfect vacation get away for this northeastern family.
