A diverse palate of sustainable plants is used to create distinct moments throughout a large site with expansive views. Highlighted in this palate are South African plants that relate to the owner’s interest in the region. Aloes, ornamental grasses and succulents populate the yard, with a rock garden courtyard that houses the owner’s sculpture. The patio and custom concrete elements work with the landscape to extend the geometries of the house, envisioned to create a synergy between the exterior and interior, land and built forms. To satisfy the owner’s desire for a garden from which he could cut for the house, a unique selection of flowering plants was chosen as a sustainable, locally appropriate alternative to what would typically be selected.
