The following pictures are from an award-winning project which features green roofs on the semi-detached houses and on the 4-car garage in Toronto, ON. The extensive green roofs on the houses include 2.5″ of lightweight growing media (due to structural loading limitations) and a pre-vegeated sedum mat. The garage green roof is mostly semi-intensive which includes 7″ of lightweight growing media to support larger perennial plant species designed to attract butterflies, except for the cantilevered carport which has limited loading capacity and has an extensive green roof exactly like the houses. The diverse plantings on the garage green roof provide seasonal interest that residents can view through large rear windows. All green roof areas include automated irrigation systems with zones that can be controlled to meet the unique demands of different plants used on the green roofs and to ensure optimal plant establishment during the first few years, especially in periods of drought. The green roof area of the houses and garage total 1,400 square feet.
