Saddlebrooke Vacation Home

Remodel of a small, tract house in the resort community of Saddlebrooke. Long-time clients who are Winter Visitors, and who had purchased this residence as a vacation home.

The objectives for the client were:

• Address the problem of the enormous, aging pool that was in serious disrepair.
• Create a smaller pool, more appropriate for the space.
• Design a landscape that allows for entertaining and year-round enjoyment.

The existing pool in this space was a monstrosity that swallowed the modest backyard and left little room for anything else. Structural damage and extreme calcification mandated its removal. To satisfy the clients’ desire for a pool, we designed a “spool” (spa-pool) which was a thoughtful, scaled-down version of their previous model. We added a cooling deck, made from a seashell composite that reduces heat and feels less dense than traditional pavers, and we accented the space with desert succulents.

Several small conversation areas were designed for entertaining, including an outdoor bar, an al fresco dining area, and a fire pit gathering area. A seat wall was added to the front of the house, along with a fireplace and steel wall that directed the heat forward, enabling year-round use of the courtyard. The color palette wove desert hues with serene, monsoon shades, delivering an “indoors-to-outdoors,” integrated design.
