Scott Residence

This 2400 s.f. modern craftsman home is nestled into a nationally recognized historic neighborhood in Athens, GA. It was constructed on a vacant infill lot. The design strives to fit the context of the historic neighborhood by offering a large front porch and emulating the double gable form and central dormer visible on some of the neighboring homes. However, this house distinguishes itself and represents the era in which it is built by integrating modern elements such as a cantilevered porch beam, steel columns and railings, horizontal cedar slats in the upper porch gable and railing, and strong stucco lines overlaid on an otherwise traditional clapboard exterior. Unlike the older surrounding homes, the main living space is an open floor plan including an open front entry delineated by a raised floor and floating 2nd floor balcony above. The balcony is held off of the front wall of the house in order to create a light-well from the clerestory windows above. The home also provides ample outdoor living with an arbor-covered patio and a screened porch covered by a walk-out balcony rooftop. The interior design, by the owner's request, is in a rustic craftsman style. It contains reclaimed heart pine floors and rustic reclaimed barn wood cladding on the fireplace wall. The custom mantle constructed of reclaimed, pre-civil war, cypress railroad ties boasts beautiful joinery and craftsmanship reminiscent of original craftsman era homes.
