Spring Street Post Modern

This project consists of a renovation and addition to a 1980 contemporary house built on the site of an old mill building embraced by lichen covered stone walls and immediately adjoined by the Pattaconk Brook. This waterway winds its way through town and just above the house is Jennings Pond which features a gorgeous waterfall easily viewed from the Living Room, Primary Bedroom, and numerous balconies. While the basic shell with its multitude of randomly sized windows and skylights were retained along with the general interior layout of rooms, walls, and doors, the exterior and interior finishes, stairs, railings, and fixtures were updated to employ a mid-century modern vibe and eclecticism. On the interior, a new clean, minimalist central stair and railings replaced a bulky, awkward, ill-placed stair and railings. Also on the interior, the new Primary Bath features a calm, clean, Zen aesthetic with a glass tile shower niche mimicking the waterfall just within view beyond. On the exterior, a new addition forms an indoor connection between garage and house and serves as both a mudroom and showroom of sorts designed to provide plenty of storage while at the same time displaying the husband’s two prized motorcycles. Also on the exterior is a new pedestrian porte-cochere to highlight the way from the driveway around the garage to the hidden front door. Many other unique features, fixtures, and finishes provide a dynamic and energizing series of spaces which blur the lines between above and below and inside and outside. (Photos by Caryn B. Davis)
