SJ Janis designed the kitchen and dining room around the homeowner's desire for a friendlier space for entertaining, food prep and homework. The existing kitchen and dining room were restrictive, dark and segregated with the desired goal of creating an open and inviting space. We removed the peninsula and small island to create a larger, functional island - ideal for both food prep and the children doing homework. The removal of the dining room wall and chimney was a challenge, but necessary to enhance the home flow and natural light in the space. The custom ceiling beams conceal the change in ceiling height and were made into a design feature and stained to match the island.
