Sugar Mill

Situated atop Squibnocket hill, the home responds to 180 degree views of the Atlantic through a series of hipped roof volumes and flat roof connectors. The program is defined by a series of hipped roof forms each incorporating different levels of natural light and specific viewscapes and anchored by a “sugar mill”; an elliptical stone gesture inspired by the client’s fondness for the West Indies. Externally, the mill volume functions to demark the home’s primary point of entry while internally as a powder room. The eliptical form is designed to be seen as a continuous inside / outside element interrupting an otherwise transparent corner of glass.

Interior detailing consists of subtle combinations of contemporary as well as traditional materials and details. Most notably the clean lines and modern details married with rich, walnut stained, oak floors and ceilings that play on a Caribbean motif.

At the exterior, the combined use of teak, western red cedar, and copper has allowed the house to take on an immediate weathered, as well as timeless, appearance.
The landscape has been reinterpreted through the cultivation and restoration of it’s indigenous plant materials, interrupted only by a view off the living room and integrated lap pool to the east.
