Under the Floating Beam
Sunshine pours through this double-height kitchen. Though the house was existing, this kitchen was an extension to the boxy ranch home. The homeowners did not wish to have a second story added, instead opting for the spaciousness of cathedral ceilings. In the kitchen, the “flying beam” is a decorative as well as structural feature. Defining the canvas of the white kitchen below it, the architect chose to use a light oak to add dramatic contrast. Lighting elements, countertops, furnishings and the brushed nickel hardware were selected by Annie Mandelkern.
