Van Heukelem Bath & Study Remodel
I had known Cal Van Heukelem for some years before he and his wife, Shirley, approached me about remodeling their fairly new home in the Observatory Park neighborhood near Denver University. You see, Cal was the owner of Colorado Hardscapes, a company of great precision and craftsmanship doing amazing things with concrete, mostly the colored, patterned variety. The prior owner of this home was disabled and used the front room of the home as his bedroom. Shirley wanted to convert that room to a study for her church activities, and she needed a ton of storage. I called in cabinetmaker Fred Vassau, whose shop built the maple lateral file cabinets, Shirley's desk and the columns and shelving. We added crown molding and trim to tie the windows all together.
A bath remodel was necessitated by the conversion of an adjacent space to a powder room. There are separate tub and shower areas, and the tile work is extensive. Again, horizontal trim ties the windows to a doorway. Mr. Vassau's shop built "adult height" (36" above finished floor) maple vanities.
