West Village Duplex
We designed this duplex penthouse in the West Village of New York City for a young couple. Once our clients finally found their ideal apartment, they hired us before they even closed. The story started when we met them in their rental apartment and got right down to work discussing the new apartment, as there was nothing that they wanted to bring with them.
Our assignment was to maximize the daylight and keep the design fresh and timeless. From the bright fuchsia colored rug the husband became set on, and the sculptural white Flos Aim pendants the wife chose, it became clear that they wanted to take some risks too.
We mixed white clean-lined furniture with eclectic pieces that we sourced from Toronto to Iceland to create the perfect home for them. Some splashes of citrus hues and vivid blue kept the white from washing out the brightly daylit space. To keep the design timeless we sourced contemporary and classic pieces of the last seventy years. In the den we matched a pair of 1960s-era Alky chairs by Giancarlo Piretti with a color-blocked, chunky wool rug woven in Argentina by Awanay. We combined a modern white sectional with a 1950s Adrian Pearsall cocktail table in the living room and set it on a white goat hair rug from Alt for Living.
The art provides some more color. The Air/Plains photograph by Millee Tibbs casts sunset hues over the white Ligne Roset dining table. In the foyer, to brighten the only space without direct light, we hung a custom bronze and clear mirror over a mirror-polished metal console. When we finally placed the accents of vintage white Dutch ceramics and small vivid green porcelain vases by Michal Fargo we closed our story and theirs began.
