What Colonial?
The owners of this ubiquitous Arlington post war colonial needed more space for a growing family, two home offices, and a future family dog. Besides more space, they also wanted to update the look of the existing structure while avoiding to all too common 'box in back' look of additions to colonial style houses.
The design solution focused on the roof. Modest shed dormers break up the front eave, and allow larger windows into the existing second story bedrooms. A larger front porch gable with open rafters compliments the new cathedral ceiling over the existing sunroom. In back, the addition's massing is softened by a steep gable and a lower shed roof over the staircase tower.
