White Ash Nightstands
These nightstands were commissioned by an interior designer for a dream bedroom project. They are inspired by a few photos of similar pieces, but turned up to 11 with solid wood construction, hidden joinery and beautiful waterfall mitre corners. The simple form is ideal for long-term aesthetic durability, as it's beauty comes from the nuance and attention detail in each edge, corner and surface.
The wood comes from Winnipeg trees brought down by the Ash Borer Beetle, an unfortunate pest beginning to wreak havoc on North American Ash. In the wake of the beetle, we can only hope the trees are handled by responsible arborists, and milled into use-able, furniture grade material. In Winnipeg, this is fortunately already a reality, and there are a number of sawyers doing their part. White Ash is one of my favourite hardwoods to work with. It is hard, durable and responds well to most woodworking techniques. It is pictured here with a medium tone stain applied.
