This house takes advantage of its sloped site by using a multi-level design to efficiently spend the budget and provide a variety of interactions with the woods. The lower level houses Family space and the Master Suite; it connects through the rear to grade and pathways down to a brook. The middle level is the Entry level; it houses informal entertainment space, including space for dancing (an expanded Foyer) and a Guest Bedroom. The upper level is for work at home, housing an office and studio; it also provides a connection to the tree canopy by way of large windows and a screen porch. All levels are connected by a light filled stair and light wells between floors so that occupants always perceive the home as a whole, three dimensional composition from top to bottom. Windows are carefully detailed -- sometimes running to the ceiling or into walls that pass from outside to inside, sometimes pulled tight at corners -- in order to break any sense of enclosure. No matter what level they occupy, occupants are connected to each other and the woods.
