229 (Lake House)

229 is a historic Arts and Craft style home built overlooking Lake Ontario in 1882. It originally functioned as a family and Quaker meeting house before, in more recent years, becoming a bed & breakfast.

STACKLAB was hired as master planners –assuming responsibility for all levels of design including architecture, interior finishes and millwork, custom furnishings and hardware.

Our brief was to embrace the existing historic elements of the house and restore some of its original features that had disappeared over the years, while simultaneously creating a casual, practical and inviting vacation home for family and friends.

Creating a modern living space while acknowledging and preserving the dominant formal character of the house, was achieved by limiting the palette of materials and colours, standardizing design elements and recalling the pared down Quaker and Arts & Crafts characteristics.

Embracing historic preservation and simplifying design, allowed us to implement modern materials and high quality workmanship. The owner’s feel our approach to this project resulted in a home that was restored to its past glory and developed to its full potential.
