When the owners of this 1904 Annapolis waterfront home decided to adapt their residence for the long term, the challenge was clear: integrate accessibility at a level that supports independent living at every stage of life — without compromising the character of a home they'd loved for years.
HD² Architects approached the bedroom wing renovation through the lens of Universal Design, treating accessibility as architecture rather than accommodation. A zero-entry shower eliminates barriers while reading as a deliberate design choice. Grab bars are positioned and detailed to work within the material palette. The hallway was widened to meet accessibility standards without announcing itself as a retrofit. Radiant floor heating adds comfort underfoot throughout the wing. Solatube daylighting brings natural light into interior spaces the existing window configuration couldn't reach — a particular asset in a renovation where the building envelope was largely fixed.
The result is a bedroom wing that can grow with its owners: a waterfront retreat where careful planning makes continued independence not just possible, but quietly beautiful.
