This family had a dream: to turn a modest 1940s cottage into a bright, modern waterfront retreat that embraced its stunning views. Though the original home sat on a prime site, its design failed to take advantage of the natural beauty just beyond its walls. The homeowners turned to HD Squared Architects to reimagine the space, prioritizing comfort, resilience, and sustainability.
A Vision Reoriented
From the outset, the goal was clear—open the home to its surroundings and flood it with natural light. The entry was strategically relocated to offer an immediate connection to the water, and the main level was completely reconfigured to enhance views from the kitchen, dining, and living areas. A second-story addition created space for a luxurious owner’s suite, complete with a spa-like bath overlooking the water. The design also emphasized efficiency: though the client was permitted over 3,300 square feet, HD Squared delivered everything they needed in just under 2,810 square feet, maximizing value and minimizing cost.

The project involved full-roof removal and structural reinforcement, turning constraints into opportunities. The formerly cramped basement was opened up with new windows and doors, connecting it to a covered outdoor patio. Resiliency was built in at every level—from upgraded insulation to energy-efficient systems—resulting in LEED Gold certification. Native landscaping supports local biodiversity, while the enhanced building envelope minimizes resource use and ensures comfort year-round.
