This contemporary kitchen was designed for two self-professed gadget enthusiasts who frequently welcome guests to share in their love of food and wine. It was essential that the kitchen accommodate multiple cooks and helpers.
The (inverted) Z-shaped cook top island includes a prep sink, wine fridge and plenty of specialized storage. It also provides countertop frontage for people to gather around and help with meal preparation, or just visit. Stemware and bottle pullouts are access from the Family Room side. The granite top overhang makes for great buffet service and accommodates two diners while a “floating” forested glass high bar on stainless stand-offs at the opposite end offers even more seating.
The perimeter of the kitchen stylishly houses the balance of appliances and more storage. Efficient pull-out pantry columns flank the oven and built-in refrigerator. A tall appliance garage houses a collection of small appliances and allows for convenient use of most of the without removing them from the cabinet. Each cabinet and drawer is designed with specialized storage in mind.
The aesthetic is decidedly contemporary. Stacking cabinets in multiple heights and depths yields a sculptural quality while contrast between the tones of quarter-sawn Aniegre and Walnut are further enhanced by the manipulation of horizontal and vertical grains. The gleaming granite, sleek black appliances, glass tile and tops add a little sparkle and sophistication while still being family-friendly.
