Barrel Vault Kitchen
This large and gracious home had been improved in many ways by the completion of several high-quality renovations, however the original 1970s kitchen was small and inefficient. The owners desired a large, airy, contemporary kitchen that would fit in with the rest of the home. The homeowners enjoyed cooking and entertaining and required high-quality appliances and a functional, efficient layout that would promote the kitchen as the social heart of the home and accommodate parties of up to 100 guests.
It was understood that an addition would be required, but there were many problems to be solved to integrate the look and feel of the new space with the existing home. With the help of structural engineer steel beams were used to modify the existing roof trusses to raise the ceiling height over the island and create the dramatic look of a barrel vault. The exterior wall and kitchen sink were also moved out to provide circulation for large groups.
Natural light being another key factor was achieved by adding a second set of windows over a portion of the kitchen sink counter. A element of connectivity was brought into play by creating three glazed openings into the existing stairway from the new kitchen. The highest-level finishes were utilized in the project including flush design heavy Birdseye maple cabinets a commercial range and refrigerator.
