Casberg
The Casberg home is located on absolutely gorgeous property in the deep woods north of Spokane. The existing home had more of a rustic ‘lodge’ feeling. The owner wanted the space to still fit into the woods but bring in a few more refined elements. A kitchen can never have enough light especially in a wooded area. It was decided that a Kalwall ceiling would solve that problem. From a previous addition, the home’s area was separated with “portals” between the spaces. Once the engineering and calculations were completed, it was decided that the wall between the spaces could be reconfigured to open up the spaces. Additional careful planning determined that the spaces could align with the new kitchen. Living in the deep woods provided an abundance of natural wood, and the owner had always used a wood burning stove. However, this was replaced with a high efficiency fireplace, eliminating much work and mess. Cabinets were custom made to flank both sides of the fireplace. The stairway was rebuilt allowing an angled cabinet and a super custom rail system of copper and steel.
An additional challenge our team tackled was the ceiling. Ceilings need to be proportional to the room size. The original builder wanted the room to be “special”, so he made the room with vaulted ceilings and wood veneer. The slope was shallow- the room was woody and boring. We reframed the ceiling and added beautiful coffered beams. Next, the unsightly trapezoid window mess was replaced with two large clean banks of windows. The new appearance is now pleasing to the eye but more importantly, makes the room comfortable and very functional.
