A Grand Welcome

Scope & Objectives:
When you have a gorgeous landscaping and a wonderful lot you want a welcoming entry that makes a statement as you approach the house. A small, dark, setback entry just won’t do. We were asked to give this 1981 house a dramatic and welcoming entry.

Once inside, the owner also want to open the entry up to the large vaulted living room and create a sensational open stairway to the basement. The owner also wanted to update the two adjacent bathrooms as part of the project.

Challenges:

How do you create a dramatic entry when all you see as you approach the home is a large vaulted garage roof? Add to this fact the living part of the homes was a basic “rancher” design with eight foot ceilings. We had to create an entry that could compete with the garage roof but not be out-of-scale once you entered the house. Since the entry was located in the center of the house, the entry width available also limited our stair configurations options.

Solution:

The solution was to create a 24’ high vaulted entry raising above and balancing the large adjacent garage roof. To balance the volume inside the entry, we created a 10’ wide x 14’ high doorway between the entry and existing living area. Given the proximity of the stairway to the enry door was only about 5’ we added a small addditon ot the front of the home to allow guest to come in without feeling cramped. A dramatic Bocci cascading globe light was placed above the center of the semi-circular basement stairway. Expanding the entry width and creating a ledge above the adjacent bathroom also balanced the height. A intierior skylight was placed in the bathroom ceiling allowing natural light from the entry to stream into an otherwise interior bathroom.

Summary:

The home had a major kitchen remodel in 2008 and a major master bath remodel in 2011 it was time to create a dramatic entry reflecting the modern renovations of the past. By using modern materials and style, the architect has joined the two previous renovations together to create a cohesive modern home. Clean modern lines, a sleek curved railing, and a 15’ cascading globe light fixture created a very welcoming progression as you enter the home. The last two bathrooms to be renovated also have a new, clean, modern feel. Large format tiles, floating cabinets, frameless shower enclosures, and a custom tiled tub bend beautifully with the overall feel of the house.
