Better Than Bacarra
Spanish Hacienda backyard with an outdoor kitchen, fire pit conversation area, a magnificent large pool with built in tables, oversize Baja shelf, and a rim-flow spa. The pergola was remodeled with runnels and hand-carved Cantera stone fire features so that it integrated into the hacienda theme.
The custom pool coping, fire features, and wall mounted planters were hand-carved to my specifications from Cantera stone and imported from Mexico.
This pool has a "sport layout"; it is shallow on both ends and deepens to only 5ft at the very center, which is perfect for volleyball. 2 built-in stands hold the game net perfectly at pool center. A pair of built-in 36" tiled cocktail tables with umbrella stands encourage games with wet playing cards and happy hours. This is a feature I have been adding to many of my projects.
The large perimeter overflow spa curves 360 degrees and creates a great reflective surface to show off the 12' long fire trough behind it. The all-tile edge makes it comfortable and attractive. This was the first time we used the new Twirly hydrotherapy jets, and the client was thrilled! Husband and wife are different heights; she is petite, so we varied the height of the steps, floor, and benches to accommodate her endearing shortcoming.
Since the outdoor kitchen is the central hub of any backyard used for entertaining, I created a u-shaped cast concrete counter fit for a king! Split level counters accommodate cooking, food prep, and bar service. The counters were cast in place into foam molds filled with concrete and recycled glass. I hand-seeded a mirrored blue glass, amber beer bottle glass, and dark brown concrete to create a durable outdoor counter that rivals anything I have ever seen in natural granite. The concrete counters were then polished with granite finishing tools to bring them to a smooth-as-glass finish. The client outfitted the kitchen with a 42" BBQ, ceramic smoker, full size oven, ice maker, sink, beverage center, side burner, and fridge.
The garden walls were constructed of "repurposed" concrete from the old patios. The individual concrete pieces were stained with permanent acid chemical stains in shades of coffee and brown and then stacked on a mortar bed.
My favorite part of the finished project is the stucco and tiled runnels spilling into the pool. Although it was complex to build four identical spillways, the end result pulled the whole yard together and completed a relaxing vacation-in-your-own-backyard experience.
