City Living

A stately 19th century townhouse in one of Boston's historic neighborhoods had been awkwardly renovated in the 1980s; new owners asked us to redesign the house to function better for a young family, with a style both appropriate to the house as well as sharp and contemporary. We worked hard to bring the light into the house, including a roof top addition that offers amazing views over the harbor and city.,

We restored the simple but elegant facade, following strict local preservation guidelines.

Townhouse

An open dining are is formed from the existing rear parlor, with a door to a rear deck and a cozy window seat.

Dining and Sitting

The kitchen was created with a new cantilevered bay 18' long, with a row of windows at counter height, bringing light all the way into the main living area.

A stone shelf all along the new windows in the kitchen provides a sunny shelf for plants.

We extended the kitchen into the living area, using materials that seem more like furniture than kitchen cabinetry.

We carved the new master bedroom dormer and the roof deck out of the existing roof, allowing the new elements to blend with the exterior structure.

An incredible place to sit and to entertain, at the top of the townhouses, which we carved out of the existing roof itself.

A restful master bedroom suite is set high in the townhouse with a wall of windows looking out the skyline.

One the lower floor, opening to the rear garden, we created a casual family room.

A glimmering wet bar opens to the new family room, at the bottom of the main stairs on the lower level of the house.

For a small nook in a child's bedroom, we designed this simple desk with storage and a great view out the window.
