Rural Retreat

On a pastoral 75 acre site in the New England countryside, we designed several buildings, including a main house, a guest house/carriage house, a pool house and a working barn. The house draws its inspiration from rural vernacular houses as well as a touch of the English Arts and Crafts.

Natural rock outcroppings surround the house, which is gradually defined by the linear stone retaining walls and the use of the same stone on the facades of the house itself.

This poolhouse was designed to gradually change from a closed building to an open frame, step by step allowing more sun and air.

Bluestone terraces link the interior spaces of the house with the sweeping lawns and meadows that surround it.

The high pitched roofs shelter the house and make it appear, at first glance, more modest in size than it actually is.

The great room has a high vaulted ceiling with exposed wood decking, beams and purlins. A freestanding natural stone chimney is set at the center of the space.

A pair of Adirondack chairs are captured in the view through an open passage connecting the drive court to the back fields.
