Collins Residence

Sited on a bluff overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, this project involved new additions and the remodeling of outmoded spaces within a 1930s house. The original house had been poorly added to and remodeled over the years resulting in an undesirable massing and characterless architectural expression.

Initially, the client's program called for the conversion of an existing attached garage into a new family room and the addition of a new detached two-car garage to replace the old one. The new garage was designed to achieve architectural symmetry and balance with an existing wing on the south end of the house. An open breezeway and colonnade were employed to organize the overall approach elevation. As the project progressed, the client recognized the positive transformation made by the placement of the garage. The program grew to include a complete remodeling of the master bedroom and bathroom suite, custom-designed light fixtures, and other decorative architectural elements lending overall balance and architectural cohesiveness to the house.
