Round Bay Residence
Sited on a gentle knoll overlooking Round Bay on the Severn River near Annapolis, Maryland, this project involved additions and the complete remodeling of a small, outmoded, 1930s Cape Cod Colonial house. Inspired by Edwin Lutyen's Tigbourne Court and Homewood, the triple-gable composition provides a pleasant architectural character and a human scale on approach. At the same time, the super-scaled opening of the center balcony establishes a strong presence for the house that relates to the greater river scape.
The expanded and remodeled spaces within accommodate a new entry foyer, living room, kitchen, dining room, and large open family room on the first floor, and a master bedroom/bathroom suite and private balcony on the second floor. A covered loggia, created by recessing gently curved floor-to-ceiling windows under the gables, floods the principal spaces with soft natural light and panoramic water views.
