Sherwood Forest Cottage
This project faced the challenges of inserting a large home into the footprint of a smaller space, as well as maintaining and reinforcing the original architectural spirit, character, and integrity of the community.
Sited on a high bluff with panoramic river views, the house was designed as a series of four individual "cottages," each carefully sized to evoke the scale and image of an original Sherwood Forest cottage. The plan was staggered to minimize the apparent mass and to create a pocket of outdoor privacy for the owners. The approach image of the house is closed and dominated by a playfully small-scaled semi-detached entry "cottage." This structure acts as an element of transition and imparts an overall impression of diminutive scale to the entire house. Upon entry, the scale shifts and the interior spaces begin to open up, revealing and relating to the larger, panoramic river views.
