Dallas | Ridgelawn | Primary Bath
This 1962 home had been frequently renovated since it’s purchase several years ago, and the homeowners have incorporated their midcentury modern style throughout. This primary bath, however, was still due for a major upgrade.
The materials design was truly fun. Natural wood toned cabinetry with an ultra-thin shaker style floats around the room. Truly, not a single cabinet touches the ground! Elsewhere, we played with a neutral motif: black marble-like floor tile that extends through the closet and shower, bright white shower tile with plain white bench topper and shelves to match the cabinet counters. Black plumbing fixtures and accessories also pop on the light grey walls. To pack a punch, a bright blue accent tile was placed on the back shower wall, which was also the client’s favorite color – a big item on the “must have” list!
The spatial layout, however, was even more important. Previously, they had narrow walk paths, an unused tub on carpet, a zero-privacy commode, cave-like shower, and closet with no door. We added square footage by soaking in a hall closet, void between the bathroom and living room, and water heater closet. The latter was accomplished by putting a tankless in the attic. By flipping the bathroom and closet locations, we were also able to reconfigure the room to enlarge clear floor space and double their shower size. Frosted glass provides some privacy at the commode. And that second entry to the hall they always locked to keep out guests? Eliminated.
