This 1970’s traditional ranch house is home to a true entertainer at heart but didn’t feel like it. Rooms were secluded and boasted several different ceiling heights and styles. The kitchen was cramped and the back hallway, doubling as the laundry room, was unsightly for guests who walked through frequently. Taking down walls, installing new beams, and simplifying the ceilings, this space is now a true entertainer’s dream. Even the wet bar got a minor aesthetic upgrade, and the laundry room now easily conceals the washer/dryer units when not in use. Now it feels like a brand-new house.
Although the kitchen was the focus of this interior remodel, by including the surrounding rooms it has created a brand-new space for this client to truly call home.

The entry and dining room were separated by a header and both had different ceiling styles (vaulted and tray, respectively) and an unsightly –but structural –post at the corner into the living room, which was inconvenient to walk around. The kitchen was completely blocked off visually.

The kitchen itself was a small G-shape and very closed off and had a third kind of ceiling treatment with beams. Counter overhang at the peninsula was too small and created bruised knees for guests. Lighting was poor even with the large windows in the room.

Original wall space wasn’t well utilized with cabinet height, and there was a major need for increased (and creative) storage solutions. The double sink was hard to use, 4 burners at the cooktop were not enough, and the lighting in the space was very poor.

The built-ins on the opposite side of the breakfast area were mainly used for overflow storage and the client was in need of space specifically for wine and entertaining. The breakfast table was rarely used and we wanted to create a banquette space for casual seating and wine tasting.

The view from the kitchen to the rest of the house was closed off and essentially non-existent. A small opening was a pinch point for guests, and the oversized pantry limited our original design. Opening up this wall was a must, while finding room for all of the appliances on existing walls.

The wet bar in the formal living room also needed a makeover to match the newly designed spaces.
