Darrach Log House

A log house from Rimouski Quebec relocated near Uxbridge Ontario for a retiring landscape artist.

Country: Canada

Originally a ship's captain's house from Rimouski, a little bit of old Quebec finds a new home in Ontario. Its French Canadian origin is obvious with its steep-pitched roof, casement windows, bell-cast eaves and piece-sur-piece log construction method.

Being a 35 ft by 28 ft cabin there was wonderful space for a ten foot table in the dining room.

The owner chose this French Canadian cabin to house his collection of Quebec furnishings. the stone fireplace on the end wall helps provide a very comfortable living room.

Just a hint of stain to the wide plank floor brought up the age-old patina. Before the house was erected the logs were spray washed to divest them of whitewash and grime.

When very long logs are not available, French Canadians introduce the vertical member shown here to join the wall with a tongue and groove technique called piece-sur-piece.
