The Atelier

The designer's own art studio... a reproduction of an 18th century Quebec atelier situated on the edge of a pond near Uxbridge Ontario.

Needing a more private place for my art studio, another building on the other side of the pond was in order. Having gathered a collection of Quebec antiques over the years I thought a French habitant cabin would do the trick.

In the winter we sometimes shovelled off the snow from the pond to skate. In the evenings we circled the rink with candles in bags of sand.

Two boards laid across the stream gave access to the atelier door and the great room within. No, you're not in old Quebec...you're near Uxbridge Ontario.

The south-facing casements created a passive solar that was sucked up by the flagstone floor. The walls were almost 2 feet thick with a 2" foam core in the middle.

I loved looking at the Atelier across the trout-stocked pond from the main house of log.

With this simple sketch, all the key elements are shown, right down to the drip edge on the casement windows. Even the wall section diagrams the technique required.

This 18th century glazed door in original red paint from Quebec serves as the main entrance to the studio. The storm door is two layers thick with a large period rimlock. Notice the thickness of the door jamb.

Although the walls are of rubble stone notice the general horizontal stratification. The Atelier was built up against the streambed which turned out to be quite a challenge.The steep roof is typical of Quebec and necessary to spill its severe winter snows.

Only one upper window to the south. Notice the hand-hewn cedar eavestrough pinned into the stone with hand-wrought hooks.

The Atelier was furnished with period Quebec antiques, most of which were from the 18th century. This Adam style cupboard was exceptional in that it retains its original decoration. Notice the flagstone floor.
