Downeast Coastal Residence

The site is a 15 acre former homestead in Steuben, Maine. It feels very Downeast with spruce woods and lichen covered ledge outcroppings. An orchard and field rolls down to the beach.

A modest, 2 bedroom, 1700 sf, year-around residence. In addition to an efficient living/dining/kitchen core, there was to be a small meditation room. a screened porch, detached art studio (900 sf) and one car garage.

One practical goal was for the design to minimize ambient mechanical sounds.
This lead to a remote mechanical room, combined with the garage, that is semi-attached by breezeway.

Some of the client's guiding words were for the design to be: tranquil, inspiring, imaginative, respectful of the natural setting, unimposing, modest in scale, warm, welcoming. The home should be a place of transition, a threshold between two worlds: sea/land; human/wild.
