The original kitchen space in this Cape Cod style home, built in 1974, was tucked in the middle of the main floor plan, surrounded by small closets, pantries, and doorways. A wood burning fireplace with brick chimney and surround located in the center of the home was used frequently, so the homeowners did not want that removed, but they were open to updating it to a gas fireplace. This couple frequently entertains large groups of family and clients, so a large open floor plan was desired. A structural addition to the home was not possible due to a recently landscaped backyard outdoor living space with gardens. During the initial consultation meeting, it was decided that the only way to gain enough space for a large kitchen with island was to flip the floorplan = the kitchen was moved to the family room space and a fabulous wet bar was conceived for the current kitchen space. Walls were removed and doorways enlarged and added to create an open floorplan. The wood fireplace was changed to a double-sided gas fireplace so it could be enjoyed from all views in the new plan. The existing hood vent was enclosed with a new custom wood surround.
A color scheme of charcoal blue and white was selected for the simple shaker style cabinetry. New rustic oak plank flooring was installed with a dark mocha finish. Countertops were selected in a white quartz pattern. The island countertop was fabricated by a family member out of reclaimed wood from family property.
