East Hampton , New York

The existing residence is an example of a modern Hampton’s summer house, originally constructed in the early 1980’s, and in need of some maintenance and renovation. The client, seeking to expand the home for use by his adult children and growing family, consulted several architects – all of whom suggested the residence be demolished and rebuilt as a classic shingle style house.

As an alternative to this strategy, we were inspired by the existing residence, both spatially and formally, and instead proposed a sensitive reworking of the original architect’s design in order to expand the home to meet the client’s needs while maintaining a sensitivity to the style and landscape.

Reorienting the existing flow of the house, our 1,500 square foot addition is anchored by a wood frame breezeway which connects the cubic geometries of the existing structure to the new master bedroom, guest room and sun-room pavilions– which adhere to the same geometry. Following this logic, our approach to the expansion of the home allows potential future additions to the residence and promotes an organic growth respectful of the existing structure.
