Embassy Row
This project is located on historic Embassy Row- where the Beaux Arts architecture of the building served as inspiration for all design choices in the landscape design- and faces Rock Creek Park. The plan is divided into three rooms, repeating the rhythm and scale of the interior spaces. The space nearest the residence includes a water feature that provides a focal point for the lower-level entertainment space as well as a soothing sound to the Owners when they are sitting on the main level balcony. The dining space inhabits the middle third of the garden, surrounded by a hedge of hornbeams and a paneled privacy fence. The final third of the space is a more casual seating area surrounding a fire pit and paved with Delaware Valley gravel. Here the fence drops in height, framing background views of the park. A Chippendale style gate provides a more porous view of the woods beyond. A dark and light diamond pattern of limestone mirrors the interior floor detailing in the dining space whereas, in the fountain area, buff limestone reflects light into the lower-level room.
