2011 Merit Award Screened Porch]: Cincinnati CORAwards
Screened Porch: The owners of the existing residence desired a dining porch for their backyard that would provide shelter while retaining the sensation of being outdoors. Simplicity of materials, finishes and detail were employed so that the porch feels more like a modern cabin or lodge than another room of the house. All cedar was left unpainted, offering a durable, low-maintenance surface as well as a natural aroma.
The existing house sits on a corner lot with the main area of open yard to the side of the house, rather than to the back. The slope of the porch's roof orients the space to this side yard, and provides a feeling of openness by allowing for increased air and sunlight.
Kitchen: Prior to renovation, the kitchen area was segregated into separate zones for cooking and eating. The eating zone consisted of a free-standing table surrounded by excessive circulation space. The renovation sought to fuse these two zones into one space, while improving circulation so that the cook's zone no longer served as the only route to the dining room.
