Hyde Park Kitchen

2010 Merit Award: Cincinnati CORAwards
2008 Interior Design Award: Cincinnati Magazine

The design strategy developed from a thorough analysis of the existing home and site which recognized the existing kitchen’s physical and social separation. The existing cabinetry was understood as an interior liner of poche, reinforcing the reading of the kitchen as self-referential, static box reluctantly contained at the perimeter of the household.

The resultant design was an architectural intervention with the physical and social adjacencies in order to discover the latent energy of the house. The technique inverts the kitchen lining to expose the wrapper to additional perforations and connections. Circulation is introduced along the exterior wall which acknowledges the natural propensity to occupy the view. The now porous wrapper acts as a screen through which the interior and exterior are encouraged to coalesce. The strong directionality of the cabinetry reinforces the new kinetic interface which extends through the borrowed landscape and finally to the horizon.

Eschewing the latest technical contrivances and design fashion, the resultant attains simplicity in an integrated, clean, modern kitchen that prioritizes efficiency while celebrating a new social and spiritual component in harmony with the house.
