Historic Remodel Project
When renovating a Historic home in Louisville, Kentucky the interior designer (Gail Ciliberti) called on Matthew & Karine to help with updating the staircases. After lengthy discussion with Gail, it was decided that the plain wood balusters would be removed but wood handgrips and newel post would be kept from grand staircase and the Maynards would create and install a new balustrade to fit underneath and between the existing newels.
In the kitchen, the handgrip had to be removed along with the wood balusters because it's height no longer met with current residential code. This presented a unique problem of how to still use the shorter newel and meet the newer building standards. By adding a forged steel finial that holds the forged bronze handgrip six inches higher then the previous wood one, the problem was solved and with good effect. Wall-mounted bronze handgrips line the winding back staircase to second and third floors, and custom wall lighting and built in fireplace screens adorn the main floor.
