Palmetto Bluffs Project

These pieces were designed by Matthew and Karine for coastal South Carolina home, overlooking an outstanding salt marsh, that might best be described as Lowcountry Contemporary. The large two-leaf gate has a central feature of a stylized Live Oak tree and the ever-present Spanish Moss. The single walk gate presents a coral element drawn by the client's son and translated into forged steel then wrapped with flowing ribbons. A basket weave design on the lower portion of both gates offers a welcoming feel that is still good visual foundation. The lower two-leaf gate has a variation on the Live Oak flanked by marsh grasses. The black multi-layered epoxy finish offers a confident contrast against the softness of the tabby stucco walls. All three gates have forged bronze hardware to insure that they hold up for years in the salt air environment.

The bronze plaque logo was also designed by the client's son. A wood master was carved and then cast in bronze in the studio.

The chandelier was one of two interior pieces and a third interpretation of the Live Oak theme. Inspired by a tree not far from the home, the branches hold over 200 hand blown Pendalogues that drape over the branches, covering the bulbs and forming a stylized Spanish Moss that catches and refracts the light.

The second interior piece is a wall-mounted sculptural representation of the flora found around the home. Samples were gathered and/or sketched on a walk that Karine took with the homeowner and family. On returning to the studio these samples were studied and recreated in forged steel to be arranged as designed in the concept sketches of the sculpture.
